Post alternate picking and CAGED
on: April 20, 2019, 15:19

My whole playing life I relied upon the CAGED system of neck organisation.
Also, it was drilled into me that you had to alternate pick everything. Apart from some chordal sweeps, it was all alternate. And players such as Benson and Martino where the masters of the day.

When i listen to the many great players of today I hear phenomenal virtuosity that you just cant achieve with alternate picking. I realise that this sound is more from economy style or whatever you wish to call it. Allowing for consecutive down picks to cross a string, or consecutive up picks.

Has anyone else felt this limitation? And if you addressed it, was there any particular exercise you found helpful to help break the alternate style? I understand 3 notes a string is helpful. But after many years of alternate, its difficult to get these "economy" moves to be intuitive, let alone keeping them in time!

Thoughts anyone?
