Ohio born / Los Angeles based guitarist Doug Perkins said he was literally “stopped dead in my tracks” when he first heard Jimi Hendrix’s “Purple Haze”, and he took what he learned from Hendrix into his jazz studies at Berklee and later Musician’s Institute, where he graduated as “Outstanding Guitarist Of The Year”. He calls the music on “Gardens Of Gizsh” by the genre of “psychedelic be-bop”, and that’s as good a name as any as you will hear as much of the Hendrix influence as you will John Scofield and John Coltrane in his playing. Comprised of a mix of originals and eclectic covers, Perkins goes from a wail to a whisper from song to song.
